Can anyone help settle a discussion I just had with a friend (a bottle
of 2004 Peter Michael Les Pavots is at stake): Herbert von Karajan was
very influential in supporting and popularizing the CD format (he was
there for the launch, too). But is it true that it was he who insisted
on it being more than 60 minutes, deeming the original plan of the
industry utterly insufficient to support classical music (Beethoven's
9th runs about 70 mins, right?).

Just curious if someone in here remembers the coverage and stories from
back then.
