I had heard that it was Sony that insisted on covering Beethoven's 9th
(depending on the conductor's tempo selections). I don't have a
definitive cite for it.

I do know that at the time, pop/rock/jazz albums were much shorter,
often barely 30 minutes. And there were lots of folks arguing that 60
minutes was enough. Making it be ~70 took some no trivial engineering.

I also know that a lot of audiophile friends of mine in the 70s would
buy Teac 10" tape decks to they could listen to classical works and
operas without getting up.
