Let's put it this way:  the jitter at the internal DAC of the SB/TP
must be lower than the jitter at the DAC of a device connected to the
SB via S/PDIF (either coax or optical).

Why?  Because whatever jitter there is in the SB's clock gets sent down
the line anyway, and the cable and connections can only make things
worse.  So all else being equal it's better to keep the signal inside
the SB.  Granted, you may believe other factors are more important -
but then you've essentially admitted jitter is not a concern, and the
whole thing starts to crumble.

And no, I don't think it's really comparable to a CD player.  AFAIK CDs
are read in real time, more or less, so one has to deal with similar
timing issues.
