If the mp3s were make with an older codec, that might be part of the problem. With Lame and the high quality presets, the sound of mp3s can be quite good. FLAC will always be superior, though, and FLAC is great because once you have a bit-perfect FLAC with all the proper metadata and embedded cover art, you can easily convert from that to any format with no need to rerip or mess with tags. Another nice feature of dbpoweramp is the batch converter. You might just want to rip to FLAC and then create the mp3 mirror in one big job.
