Some more results: changing the sampling rate of the generated waveforms from 44.1 to 48 makes no difference to any results! I can't go to 96 because the SB3 doesn't support it!
Below roughly 750 Hz the squarewaves coming out of the TACT and SB look pretty much the same (it's quite hard to tell) but as you go up to 1k, 2h and so on the differences become more obvious and are just like that photo I posted earlier in the thread. It looks like a component at roughly double the waveform frequence is being superimposed on the ringing harmonics - as you said.
