The research only gets you so far, because I don't think anyone completely understands the human/music interface and so it's difficult to predict what people can and can't hear. I wouldn't agree with you that 'noise' 100dB down is impossible to hear for example. I also don't think you can judge whether something is worthwhile by its price tag or the eloquence of its 'scientific' explanation.
