Well, certainly in the case of wire, there are a lot of slippery characters in the mix. And they are not above using the most creative BS known to mankind in order to create insecurities in the consumer that they will somehow miss part of the musical experience if you don't use their brand.
As manufacturers, we listen to the various products. We ignore all the marketing crap. We pick, or at least should pick, internal wire based on how it sounds in our products. Yes, there are a few cases where they are riding the coattails of folks' insecurities by bragging about what they use. In some cases, they have worked in conjunction with the wire maker to come up with something that sounds good. The equipment guy brags that he uses it, because they like it. They automatically discount whatever BS their buddy uses to sell it the consumer. But the fact is that it does sound different. It does play a rather annoying part in the design cycle. O/T a bit...... You realise it is not hard to get into the wire business. Most commercial wire and cable companies will spit out any ol' type of wire that you can conjure up, with your name on it, if you can afford a 5000' run. So, you call one up, think up some oddball pairing and twisting scheme, pony up the money, and you are in business. Think up some creative BS, with some slick photos and you are in business. You follow that up (before your 1st 5000' is gone) by calling up your supplier an going "Hey, that last roll of wire that you made......could you change the..........(fill in the blanks).....and make 5000' of that style." Repeat the other above steps. Just make sure that you add "Our research has lead us to........" Trust me. That is how a lot of it comes about. Their "research" is usually nothing more than asking someone like me a really off-the-wall question. Sometimes they listen, and sometimes they still insist on making a speaker cable with a too small bundle of 24 ga. wire. "You should hear how good the new wire sounds. It really, really really sounds good. The bass could be a bit better, but hey..... Want me to send you out some?" "No, that is ok." "You sure?" "Yes." "Well, I have to thank you somehow......" -Then either listen to what I tell you or stop calling me for free design help!- Pat -- ar-t http://www.analogresearch-technology.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ar-t's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13619 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=56712 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
