I'm going to try it at the weekend but almost certainly it will have to
lower the overall level of the track in order to buy some headroom to
try and recover the clipped peaks.

By the way, heuristic algorithm is code for " a guess, based on some
rules we invented"

Compression is a fine and necessary thing and is present in some form
or other on 99.99% of all commercial recordings. Compression has
nothing to do with clipping.

Brick-wall limiting that causes clipping is a whole different ballgame.

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...SB3+Stontronics PSU - Altmann
JISCO/UPCI - TACT 2.2X (Linear PSU) + Good Vibrations S/W - MF
Triplethreat(Audiocom full mods)- Linn 5103 - Aktiv 5.1 system (6x
LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend Supertweeters,
Kimber & Chord cables
Outdoors: Boombox+Creative Sub (If I remember to turn it on...)
