The DAC in the Duet's receiver are generally pretty good by consumer electronics standards. The designers put a lot of work into making them really good. I would say for a whole-house setup you can connect it directly, no need for an outboard DAC. You would have to goto a fairly fancy (Say a Benchmark DAC, or a Transporter) DAC to get much better.
