Considering which parts of the replay chain introduce the most distortion, a fairly decent DAC will not add very much at all compared to the rest.
Anyone can form impressions of sources and of course I believe I've heard some genuine differences. But I have experienced my impressions suddenly changing when an accomplice withholds the identity of the source. Whether I listen short or long the ideal would be for me not to know what source I'm listening to, and to form impressions that way. This may sound tricky but I think it's possible - I have a few ideas!
