My Sony MD deck is an MDS-JB940. Not sure if they all work the same way, but it's very simple to use as a DAC; connect the digital out of your Squeezebox to one of the digital inputs (my deck has two optical and one RCA digital in, so plenty of choice). Eject any MD. Press the record button and select the correct digital input. Hey presto, it is functioning as a DAC.
The only other MD deck I owned was an early Sony one, which I lost in a burglary about 11 years ago, so I can't remember if it did the same thing.
