On a slight change of tack and for you Beck fans, it's amazing that the
record companies can take a compressed block of cheese and extract that
extra 1db of extra compression for an 'Enhanced release'! See
http://www.yeats.co.uk/public/Audio/beck-waveform.png

The top waveform is from the standard Euro release of Midnite Vultures
by Polydor and the one below is the special 'Limited edition' version
of the album.

As you can see at the top like most Beck the sound is compressed and
trashy. However, you'll notice how they've managed to compress even
this mess further in the 'Limited edition' version underneath. This can
be notice subtly throughout where the lower waveform is purely solid in
parts. I'm not saying this is going to be that noticeable, but its
enough to be visible, barely, on an audacity screenshot and that's
probably audible. (I think I can hear the difference, sighted.) But in
any case it bears repeating that not all releases are quite equal even
for trash pop.

PS: BTW if you've heard Beck's Odelay or Mutations - and liked what he
was trying to do - but just found it too damned annoying and ended up
with a headache then you will LOVE Midnite Vultures. It's Beck being
inventive AND upbeat and relaxed. :)
