The Steelhead is closer to $7K, so that flunks your budget a bit. You can get a phono-preamp at any Guitar Center for about $60. They sell them for DJs. Not too likely to be audiophile quality, but its cheap. You are in luck, this month's The Absolute Sound has a huge section about turntables, carts, and phono preamps.
