If you have a separate pre/power amp or can bypass the pre somehow, then try it either way and see what you prefer. I don't have any fixed views on what should sound better, it depends on many factors IMO. If you can't hear a difference then the SB3 volume control is a bit more convenient - everything on one remote. If you use an integrated amp and can't bypass the pre I recommend just using the amp volume control.
