So in short it seems that the checksums pretty much completely
mitigates the chance of error (from storage of the file up until it
reaches the DAC), which we would see in eg the Transporter as the
"squeezebox" in built in. And with a squeezebox attached to an amp the
only error would be the jitter due to the spdif connection? (which is
arguably inaudible)

So does the TCP/Flac checksums omit  the need for the asynchronous mode
which is in some of the USB based music clients? (which gives control of
getting the file to the client rather than the OS of where the files are
stored)
