Sorry for jumping back in that late, seems I missed a little.
Some points for clarification:
- If you have "applied" Gain to MP3 files using tools like -MP3Gain-
or -foobar2000- (which, in my opinion, you shouldn’t), these
tools will actually -modify- the audio frames to play at another
level, in 1.5dB steps. Since 1.5dB steps is rather coarse, tools like
-MP3Gain- store the exact difference to the intended result in
ReplayGain tags, so you usually will have another small correction.
Files with RG "applied" can be played in SC with RG Track or RG Album
or Smart RG enabled.
- Files that already have RG "applied" (i.e., volume levels changed)
can still be re-calculated with replaygain tools anytime. Since the
loudness per frame was changed before, the RG tool you use will just
see and calculate smaller correction factors.
- On SqueezeBox players, under "More Info", you sometimes see values
like -"Album Volume Adjustment: 1.49 dB (1.10 dB to prevent
clipping)"-. Now if the original recording was low in volume, the
Replay Gain calculation might come up with a -positive- volume
correction (+1.49 dB in our example) which would lead to -clipping-
(i.e., going -above- the highest possible volume and thus losing
audio information that was louder — it would be "snipped off"
and sound horrible). SC (or actually its programmers) is quite a
clever machine — it won’t allow this happening and
consequently reduces the overall volume just enough that no clipping
can occur (to +1.10 dB in our example, instead of +1.49 dB). In this
case, of course the overall volume is less than what you would
expect, but at least your ears won’t be damaged by hearing
badly clipped music!
