Interesting.  

I think a few devices have implemented smart digital volume control
that doesn't just shave bit depth.

For example, the Oppo DVD players appear to do something more subtle.

And one of the touted advances in Vista over XP was that volume control
was no longer based on reducing bits.  (Of course, the loss of easy
direct digital untouched output is a drag.)
