That's the problem, compression sounds impressive at the first moment.
Part of the effect is that it is just louder (in average level terms)
and part is the little details being more obvious. Very soon it wears
off and you notice it doesn't sound real. I've found even if I'm aware
of the problem I can still be sucked in sometimes initially. :/

BTW I think the same applies to equipment/systems. A wide-ish
bandwidth, low-distortion system can appear less seductive at first but
I prefer it.
