Don't know why - my secondary research says it does make a difference
on macbook into pro/consumer dac - In fact Lavry advice is to
deliberaely do  this even with normal 16.44 CD rips.

I am asking if anyone can testify if they have done likewise using
squeezebox as transport...

Not a techy so can't explain the logic to you. Something to do with how
certain DAC process word length maybe??(although not sure what this
means)

Think I'll rip a couple of albums using DBpoweramp 24bit settings and
A/B vs 16bit settings over bank holiday..If the wife let's me escape
gardening duties;)
