I asked the question before in the recent biamp thread and am interested
in more views/ responses. Thx DCtoDaylight for your response, feel free
to elaborate here :-)
A while ago I read a few of Richard Hardesty's Audio Perfectionist
Journals, which I found quite interesting. In journal # 2 ('*which can
be downloaded here*'
(http://audioperfectionist.com/pages/freejournals.html)) he discusses
the use of sub-woofers in a high-end stereo configuration and suggests
that use of powered subwoofers in conjunction with a passive high-pass
filter inserted between the pre-amp and power-amp (ie sub-woofer takes
its feed from the same interconnects as the power amp) will "reduce
intermodulation distortion in the midrange by a factor of two or more,
dramatically improve the resolution of midrange and high-frequency
detail, double or triple the dynamic range capability of your system
without changing your amplifier or speakers and improve imaging more
than you can imagine". That's a hell of a lot of improvement from
something that initially seems counterintuitive. He then goes on to
describe the characteristics of a sub-woofer suitable for music
listening and gives the Vandersteen 2Wq a big nod of approval.
Thoughts anyone?
