The Vandersteen 2Wq crossover technique is definitely unusual.... It
looks like a high pass filter is used before the the main power amp as
usual, but then this amplifier's output is sampled and the low
frequencies boosted to drive the sub amplifier. Any colouration in the
main power amp's characteristics at <30Hz will be present in the sub
output, which the vandersteen spec suggests is desirable!

My experience is consistent with konut's suggestion. I used a 1st order
crossover for a few years, but now use a line level 4th order crossover
at 60Hz and would not go back. The 1st order setup took alot of tweaking
to avoid phase issues in the crossover band, and having the sub produce
any higher frequency output (frequencies where the human ear is
directional) makes it harder to hide.

That article also has some comment on frequency response equalisation.
It dismisses active room correction as expensive and with "too many
negative side effects", and suggests that room response can be
adequately managed by tweaking placement and crossover frequencies.
That's a fairly unusual opion to see expressed in an article about
subwoofers! Placement is important of course, but it alone cant compete
with active correction based on in-room measurements. With squeezeboxes
we have several excellent low cost room correction options that should
not be ignored.
