Thanks for this post. It must have been at least 10 years since I last bought one of the HiFi comics but decided to buy a couple to read while travelling this summer - and happened on the self-same Philips box review. I agree 100% with the comments here. I would bet that my carefully ripped FLAC files are at least identical to and in some cases "better" than decoded-on-the-fly Red Book CD (better in the sense of fewer data errors).
All I need is an old PC, a cheap CD-ROM drive and dbPowerAmp with AccurateRip - and of course an SB3 or Duet. Saves a bit of cash compared to the Wadia or whatever. I don't suppose it occurs to these people that cheap data CDs and WiFi are used to transfer trillions of bits of computer software and data with vanishingly small error rates because this is the way it has to be. Of course a big factor for high-end listening is the particular DAC used and that does, in my experience, make a difference. I did pay out a bit of money so that I could feed all the ones and zeroes through the same, low jitter-rate hardware. I now just get on with enjoying the music. Needless to say it will a few more years before I buy another HiFi magazine. (I do accept there are a few decent contributors whose names I recognised after all these years but I cannot be bothered to plough through the rest of the copy). -- dBerriff SB3, Boom, Musical Fidelity kW250S, Castle Stirling 3's ------------------------------------------------------------------------ dBerriff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12247 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64972 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
