By a bit "outdate", what do you mean? Please list the gear that you're
using now so we can make suggestions.

It is my opinion that one doesn't need an external DAC until ones other
equipment is to the point that it can use the possible improvement over
the Squeezebox DAC. The Squeezebox DAC is a very good DAC for the money.
Also my opinion is that is that one should spend as much money as
possible on the speakers while having enough money get proper electonics
to drive them. IOW, if they is extra money available/leftover put it
toward better speakers now and upgrade ones electronics later when more
money is available.

If you can, go listen to some Thiel or Vandersteen speakers. They
offers big bang for the buck while not needing overly expensive
electronics. Not knowing what you have now or your budget, hearing those
speakers will give you an idea what is possible on a budget.
