Based on the original post, I read Richard Hardesty's Audio Perfectionist Journal #2. The first thing I thought of was how this was similar to adding a subwoofer to a SB Boom (even a mediocre subwoofer to my Squeezebox Boom significantly improved the sound quality). What's nice about the Boom is that Caleb's clever subwoofer crossover filter (implemented in software in the DSP) makes this very simple to do.
So, I am trying to figure how to do the same thing with a higher-end system. Richard Hardesty likes the Vandersteen 2W -- looks like they come with some kind of high-pass crossover (but looks like you need one per channel and it's not clear if you can use only one sub). Another option might be the Velodyne DD-10 sub(s). I had one of these before and was impressed, esp. when properly equalized. The one drawback about using their built-in crossover is that it is RCA out (which, given how far my stereo amp is from the sub, would be a longish run. I'd prefer balanced.) I see that Bryston makes an electronic crossover, the 10B-SUB (see:http://bryston.com/10b_m.html). Looks like this unit allows single or dual subs, which is nice. So, in a similar fashion to the SB Boom, this would manage the LF crossover and I would set the sub crossover at its highest freq. But is this box overkill? Any other ideas for subs/crossover setups?
