No, but standing closer to a violinist having a very slightly bad day may sound better than staying further away from the same violinist on a different day. I think that close level matching is a must when we have the same recording and gear in the same quality/price level. I don't think I need level matching to tell a good system from a poor one, but if I swap only the source in a system that I am familiar with, then, I need close level matching. We are not talking here about the quality of the music, because after all, we hear the same music, but with a different perception.
