What industry standard? In the professional recording space, its common
to have a master clock driving all of your separate ADC systems, since
the cost effective ADC typically have only 8 channels, and even a modest
setup will need 16 channels. Some sessions need a lot more channels, so
a common master clock is used to keep all of the ADCs in step

So that if you have a source feeding the Transporter, you can tell the
TP what clock to use. The name is a strong hint, its a word clock input.

Just guessing, but I bet that @Elberoth thinks that jitter is a real
problem as well.
