The -24dB test won't work because the sync signal is too quiet after
that much attenuation...

Anyway, I feel the end of the road has been reached now.

We are probably going to have to agree to disagree on this topic.

I'm happy with the numbers from the tests. I'm happy that using 12dB of
digital attenuation (the max I am using with Replaygain) is still giving
me 90dB of dynamic range/SNR - which is more than enough for me and my
musical tastes.

I've tried listening carefully to very quiet tracks and very dynamic
tracks (like your Offenbach example) and can't hear any degradation at
-12dB. In reality such tracks require replagain boost rather than cut.

Things like DRC make a much greater impact on my personal listening
pleasure than the theoretical loss of 6dB of SNR which I can't hear
anyway.
