It's all about the care taken in the (re)mastering in most cases - on top of the things you mentioned, all of which are important. You can hear the words properly on the REM DVD-A's for example. They are mostly much on the normal CD's. The DVD-A of Hotel California walks over the CD version. Even when downsampled to 48/24. Likewise the SACD versions of (most) Genesis albums.
