Hi, I'm a bit late in this thread, sorry. This tip may not be for you
as it involves a modification to the Touch. Removing (bypassing) the
electrolytic capacitors on the analog output of the Touch made a
dramatic improvement in sound quality (to my ears). John Swensson has
written about this several times in various posts and I can confirm
that this makes a big difference in the direction you describe in the
quote above.

With the capacitors in place I found the sound to be veiled and
generally uninvolving, a bit grainy, but not harsh. After the removal
the sound is open, transparent with better dynamic performance and not
grainy at all.

Note: I have implemented some of soundcheck's software tweaks, but I am
still letting the Touch receive flac files as I use BrutefirDRC. I have
not yet found a way to use PCM here, but I've tried streaming PCM to
the Touch and the difference is quite clear when using the internal
DAC. No electrolytics and PCM streaming would be very good indeed.
