Bearing in mind that I'm talking about eBay in the UK rather than the US...
Auctions work fine. I've sold plenty of items (audio and otherwise) through auctions and not had a problem. There really are people out there prepared to take a risk and buy fairly high-value gear on eBay. (I wouldn't buy that way, but as a seller it seems to work). The thing that I very much dislike about eBay is their flat-rate 10% commission, which seems rather greedy - it used to be much lower. (Perhaps the commission rate is lower in the US?).
