My thanks again to those who read/replied to my post. I have very satisfactorily resolved the problem via a reasonable (in terms of price) workaround: I bought a QED optical/digital converter and a short length of digital coaxial cable, plugged the optical cable into the QED, the digital coax into the transporter (where it does not wobble), and it works perfectly.
It should not have had to be done, but I suppose that's life.
