I just read the manual and some stuff on the Yamaha homepage this models does not even have "pure direct" as yamaha calls it. And it is by no means absolutely clear that this pure direct actually is an analogue passthru ??
This is/was one of their smaller receivers and the manual is very fuzzy on such details, In such case I would assume that it has no analog mode and that digital input in fact are what you should use if possible. This makes sense if the product is designed to a price point, an analog volume control with exact tracking for 7 channels would cost more than the whole receiver, and volume control in a digital multichannel world is best done digitally in software then it's feed to the 24bit dacs .
