I certainly wouldn't miss either the knob or the second VFD. I have the
second VFD turned off on mine, an if I were experiencing the degaussing
noise that others have reported I'd open up the Transporter and
disconnect the knob entirely.

A Boom knob would not only have been fine, but better, IMO. Not only
would it not have needed the degaussing weirdness, it has a much better
feel to it than the transnav thing. (But remember that the Boom came
after the Transporter, so there was no way to know it at the time.)
Still, I doubt that I would ever use it. I certainly can't imagine
Logitech investing anything in refitting the design to use a different
knob when they know most people don't use it. My guess is that they're
just trying to clear out some leftover parts by selling Transporters
without knobs.
