Hi, at the low cost end a Smps can out perform a linear Psu. Linear isn't always better, the Smps with the Touch is very good. A lot of Hi end Hifi manufacturers are using Smps Inc Linn. So don't write Smps off, a bit of specification Research will find you one at low cost.
I agree with you that there is a point where spending money on Cables and Psu's becomes pointless when your Speakers / Amp aren't good enough to resolve differences. Luckily I haven't reached that point yet but if your speakers are towards the lower cost end and are physically smaller you will hit that resolution limit sooner.
