Hi guys Re the TR SE picture Mickey posted. I think it's a bit unfortunate that the electronic part of the knob is still visible inside TR. It is my guess that in that picture the electronic part is connected only to be able to test TR functionality without the need of an IR remote. (But that really only is a guess as I don't have any more information than you on this.)
What I can say for sure though is that TR firmware works fine without the electronic part of the knob connected to the front panel board.
