Hi folks.

I just wanted to let you know, that I'm running a Windows 7 server now
- not just temporarily.
I've been running Linux systems for years... ...and never believed
that this would happen. Especially on the server side.

I currently do not manage to get the Linux (Ubuntu 10.10) driven
network as "good sounding" as my W7 based setup. The difference I'm
hearing is not what I'd call subtle.

I've been working on and tweaking my Linux for quite some time during
the last weeks. As soon as I managed to catch up with W7, my dear
friend Tom applied my communciated modifications to his W7 server and
made it even better sounding.
There was no other way for me then taking on the SBT challenge from the
W7 side.

I'm wondering if the networking implementation of the SB W7 server and
the
Linux SB server differs a lot. I suppose the OSX and Linux
implementations are pretty close. If anybody got an idea - shoot.

While switching to W7 I've taken the chance to reshuffle my entire
network and server setup. I'm pretty happy with the achieved result --
for now.

I can tell you not only the operating systems play a role in the game.

And what's bugging me most is the learning that - at least in my case -
the network and streaming over network can't be regarded "lossless"
respectively transparent. The data buffered at the receiving end
obviously won't by enough. Everything involved - server, router,
parameter settings, cable, wlan&encryption, asf. seems to have an
impact on the receiving end, which somehow indirectly impacts what's
coming out of the receiving end.

I always thought USB audio implementations would be a pain in the
neck...

Next week I'm gonna test the potentially best in class ( German Stereo
magazine) ) ethernet cables. Let see.

Cheers
