I think this or that filter may sound better just like tone controls can
sound better. For me, accuracy IOW transparency is more important for
long term listening. It may not make every track sound as good as it
can but it minimises the sameness of the sound. I don't want to hear
how great my digital source makes music sound...after three or five
hours of listening I don't want to hear my digital source at all. I
want just to hear what's playing.

There are several ideas about what makes a "good sounding DAC" but only
one idea about what makes an "accurate DAC". This sums up my attitude to
line level equipment.

Loudspeakers and to some degree power stage is where design trade-offs
are necessary. Here, opinion on pyscho acoustics will influence which
balance is struck. Much more "black magic" at the loudspeaker end I
feel.

But for me digital playback has been solved, for all practical
purposes, with currently available technology.

IMHO,
Darren
