The reason why the LSBs don't carry information by themselves, is that they're entirely dependant on the MSBs.
Nice analogy, TerryS. Both intuitive and accurate. There's only one scenario where the cents make sense without the dollars, and that is if there's some correlation between them. If you always buy stuff costing $9.99, you can interpret the constant $0.01 increase to be a $9.99 dicrease, and thereby reconstruct the MSBs. But if you don't, you're out of luck. And in no kind of normal music is there a correlation between the MSBs and the LSBs.
