Ermm... It is Giga_bit_ Ethernet. 1000Mbit/sec. In practice Gigbit Ethernet can achieve around 110MByte/s reads due to overhead (writes slightly less but still >100MByte/s) with the right hardware - and it is not as uncommon as you seem to think.
