Forget audio for a moment - if you bother reading anything in the area of psychological testing and investigation, the technique you described in your post is a common method. Try reading Dr. Cordelia Fine's book "A Mind of Its Own: How Your Brain Distorts and Deceives". It was one of twelve books on the UK Royal Society Science prize list for 2007.
