ALL SB devices since SB2 that have digital outputs always put out
24-bits. This is not "upsampling" as there is no sample rate
conversion. The SB volume control works in 24-bit - thus everything has
to be converted to 24-bit (by padding) before any
volume/gain/replaygain/fading etc is applied.

This is why using the SB vol control is generally not the big deal some
people like to make out...
