When you increase bit depth it's like going from pounds to pence. You
can represent values at higher precision.

2400 pence is another way of writing £24 - it's not an approximation.
(Going the other way, reducing bit depth, it is possible to lose stuff
though.)

So as long as you don't do anything else to the numbers, just
increasing bit depth from 16 to 24 is "technically bit correct".
