Wombat; Thanks for pointing me at Sox. I haven't yet figured out where it fits in the chain but learning is half the fun. I am hoping though that someone knows how to convince Squeezebox Server or the Touch's firmware to do this without adding any plug-ins or outside programs.
Pski, Daverz; I'm not surprised by your responses. I had hoped to not get into explaining the somewhat unusual setup. Well...a picture is worth a thousand words. The speakers are mounted on the 6 by 6s that hold up our roof. The area to listen from is the built-in stone bench on the other side of the table from the two dining chairs. This is where the photo is taken from. There are a number of firmly established acoustic principles in play here making for extremely good sound as long as the speakers can be (virtually) equidistant from the listener. The most basic are that there are no early reflections and that there are no room resonances since there is no room and the nearby earth and water refuse to vibrate very much. The fact that the speakers are firing into an area with walls and a ceiling make for much better sound than one gets in the great outdoors or in an anechoic chamber. It is much like what recording studio designers try to accomplish with what they call "live end, dead end." Stereo is a very fragile effect requiring precision phase relationships. Getting it right does require millisecond precision. Few who have not visited a conscientious audio dealer or a national audio show have ever heard it. +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Filename: DSCN06321.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=12347| +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ -- Harry G ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Harry G's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1165 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89784 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
