To bad it is really hard to qualify where the material comes from. If you have a clear lowpass in the spectrum chances may be high it came from PCM. In that case the 24/88.2 version from DSD may be 2 times changed in format already and may sound different alone for that. If it sounds better!? It shouldn´t but subjectivity and expection bias may come in. About filtering a member lately asked at Hydrogenaudio. I already suggested to lowpass this material very early. A filter at ~35kHz or even lower should do well for 88.2Khz. With sox that equals 80%. When Weiss lowpasses even lower they even know better! I did read some really stupid things regarding that. Some state you hear the harmonics still that are burried in that noise so don´t filter!! Seems that HDtracks has unsatisfied customers because they saw the lowpass of the high bitrate releases coming from DSD in some funny graph and complained! Others need a minimum of 176kHz without filter to get that DSD analog feelings from PCM and so on...
One more hint is not to rely on the waveform pictures some use to compare whether the music is compressed. The HF garbage in the DSD music washes out these peaks visualy. So only compare that if you do a lowpass at around the frequency the material you compare it with ends. -- Wombat Transporter (modded) -> RG142 -> Avantgarde Acoustic based 500VA monoblocks -> Sommer SPK240 -> self-made speakers ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Wombat's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4113 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89733
