External DAC are not immune to jitter on the digital out of the Touch. Therefore the TT3 mods have also an incidence on sound quality with external DAC. I own a V-DAC II and I am experimenting that. You might disable some of the mods like screen off to get a solution in between. You would loose some benefits of the mods but still improve over stock sound with external DAC. I am using screen on by default and turn it off for serious listening. Squeezebox Controller is now available at a bargain price from logitech online store (bought one at 72€ in Belgium) and allow to use Touch without screen like the Duet. Good remote alternative is iPeng for Apple iOS devices or SqueezeCommander for Android.
