Sounds like a logical way to approach, if I can find the parts to demo.
Lots of good ideas. I am curious as a bit of a hobbyist, with some time
to play with, the reference to the DIY PSU.  I have read that these make
a difference by cleaning up the sound from a hardware perspective, but I
didn't think it made much difference if one used a power conditioner
like a Furman. (which I don't in my main listening setup.)  Everything
plugged direct to the wall with a basic surge protector.  Which does
make me ask what is the low cost switched PSU you are referring to?  A
wall outlet? Or a surge protector?
