The logic behind cable length rule is a balance between two adverse
effects:
A- the cable acts like a filter on the signal resulting in altering
frequency response with more or less impact on the sound depending of
cable characteristics (LRC, dielectric,...) -> the shorter the cable,
the better
B- poor adaptation of the impedance at both ends of the cable is
inducing signal reflection and stationary waves that interfere with the
original signal -> the longer the cable, the higher the attenuation of
the reflected signal, the better

The longer than two meter rule comes from the assumption that
reflection noise is of another order of magnitude than the alteration
of the sound caused by a decent quality cable, especially for the Touch
where S/PDIF impedance is poorly matched.
