Excellent thoughts and I'm in complete agreement with these sentiments.

My colleagues and I beat on each other relentlessly when we are
brainstorming, thinking out loud, playing with ideas, and swimming in
uncharted waters. And we can be downright vicious about it (and that's
in person, journal referees can be worse, and they are typically not
known (double blind review process)). I guess the difference is that
my colleagues and I can beat on each other unmercifully, take notes on
it all, but then all smile, genuinely thank each other, and head to the
local pub for a post-seminar debrief, focusing on the beer!

At this forum, it seems that being questioned often leads to mean
spirited debate and personal attacks. I have a hard time understanding
why folks can't report their tweaks, let others question the tweaks and
whether they make any sense, and then move on. I'm probably biased, but
it always seems to me that it is the tweakers who get upset/insulted at
the mere fact of being questioned.
