They would not want to make the user interface useless, it's a feature cherished by most users and sane people. it Is a big part of the squeezebox experience usage of apps and all, people with local files is a minority in any form, and many of those also like the UI to. As most of squeezplay is open source they would say thankyou and use it anyway, nothing here is rocket science you can certaily develop another sw package that tweaks the same settings and parts of the OS and squeezeplay.
