1) they can do. I've seen 3 people lose eardrums at gigs... But never with a hi-fi... They generally can't generate the SPL's without blowing up first. I've never heard any hi-fi or studio monitoring system generate the. "roar " of a full Marshall stack or a GOOD rock drum kit or an orchestra (or even a sing jazz band for that matter, never mind a big pipe organ or marching band! ). 2) some rock bass drums can do it depending on their construction, as can some big brass instruments ... Euphonium etc By the way I take exception to your delineation between audiophiles/music lovers and head bangers. It's just as difficult to reproduce rock instruments as orchestral ones. in fact it can be harder. Very few members of an audience sit a handful of yards from an orchestra... You tend to be much further away, which reduces the SPL's dramatically (inverse square law )... Very few rock guitar players feel that what comes out of a hi-fi sounds anything like what they hear when they play...
